Principal Backend Engineer

Job description

Jeeves is hiring a Principal Backend Engineer for a full-time remote position in Brazil within its LATAM engineering organization. The role focuses on backend systems powering Jeeves' global financial platform across payments, corporate cards, spend management, cross-border transactions, and compliance infrastructure. The engineer will also integrate AI-powered capabilities into production backend systems.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services that process financial transactions and serve customers across multiple countries.
• Write clean, testable, production-quality code in Go, Python, or Node.js/TypeScript and participate in design and code reviews.
• Build and consume RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
• Design inter-service communication using gRPC, message queues, and event-driven architectures.
• Design and optimize PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis data models for correctness, performance, and scale.
• Own backend features from scoping and technical design through deployment, monitoring, and iteration.
• Implement authentication, authorization, input validation, and data-protection controls across distributed services.
• Integrate LLM APIs such as OpenAI or Anthropic into production backend features.
• Build safe pipelines for AI-generated outputs, including validation, fallback handling, observability, and graceful degradation.
• Instrument services with structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics.
• Participate in on-call rotation, production incident response, and post-incident reviews.
• Contribute to CI/CD, testing infrastructure, deployment practices, and globally distributed engineering collaboration.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional backend engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• Professional fluency in English for daily written and spoken collaboration with global teams.
• Professional fluency in Portuguese or Spanish for LATAM collaboration.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language: Go, Python, or Node.js/TypeScript.
• Experience designing RESTful APIs, microservices, and event-driven backend systems.
• Strong relational-database knowledge, with PostgreSQL preferred.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ability to integrate third-party APIs reliably with error handling, retries, and observability.
• Experience working on globally distributed teams across multiple time zones.
• Comfort using AI tools in everyday engineering workflows and integrating LLM outputs into backend systems.
• Preferred Qualifications
• Fintech, payments, financial services, or another regulated-industry background.
• Experience with ledger systems, payment rails, KYC/AML, or PCI-DSS.
• Startup or high-growth scale-up experience.
• Experience with multi-currency systems or cross-border payment processing.
• Familiarity with Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar message-queue technologies.
• Experience working in global multi-country product and regulatory environments.
• Fluency in both Portuguese and Spanish.
